Growing up as a lonely, closeted gay girl has inevitably turned me into a himejoshi/yuri fangirl. I was 11 when I became obsessed with the Magnet music video, and when I watched Madoka Magica for the first time. These two pieces of media were pretty much my gay awakening. With time I managed to heal my internalized homophobia and embrace the cringe. Nowadays I'm so happy to see animanga like Bloom into You or green yuri making their way into the mainstream - although I have aged out of their target demographic, it brings me joy to know that more and more queer teenagers are accessing these 'safe places' in which they can shamelessly question and explore non-heteronormative relationships.
Despite the multiplication of this kind of media, I still find it hard to find good WLW stories that are not male-gazey. I'm always starved for pieces of media that are actually about complex, multi-layered sapphic characters and relationships, instead of one-dimensional kawaii anime waifus for male audiences to ogle at.
